Bonjour!

We are off to a good start! I am pleased to be hearing French in class and to see quiet students listening to instructions. The class has already received a commendation for their behavior. Bravo!

I want to remind you that our school is scent-free due to some allergies. If your child has hand sanitizer, it should be scent-free to respect this policy. Merci!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. I certainly appreciate any issues being brought directly to my attention.

I look forward to seeing you next Thursday evening for Parent Information Night at 6:30.

Grade three French immersion curriculum outline

French Language Arts: Vocabulary, reading and writing are taught through activities based on the following themes:

returning to school, health and safety, Christmas, winter, friendship, chores, ecology, inventions, plants, bike safety, animals, summer

*Note: By the end of the third grade, students are expected to be able to write in cursive (handwriting).

Mathematics: Exploration and manipulatives are used along with the textbook to teach the following concepts:

- patterns

- numbers to 1000 (place value)

- data collection ( surveys and graphs)

- geometry ( shapes and solids)

- addition and subtraction (three-digit numbers)

- multiplication and division ( up to 6x6 )

- measurement (time, length, weight)

- fractions

Science: main themes of study are:

light and shadow, time, movement and animal habitat

Visual arts: Lessons include a brief study of an artist and practicing a specific technique ( such as drawing with different mediums, painting, collage, etc.) before doing the actual 'creation'.

Music and physical education are on alternate days.

In May, there will be provincial assessments of reading and writing skills.

Homework notes

Homework is meant to give your child some extra time to practice what has been learned in class and to inform you of her/his progress. Please check that homework is done before signing the sheet in the duo-tang. It should be signed daily by the person helping with homework ( babysitter, older sibling, grandparent,...). If you are not the one helping with homework, I suggest that you also sign to help you keep track of things and to assure me you've received notes destined to you. There is a mark on the report card for "Completed assignments" that includes homework. Thanks for your support in this area.

To help you understand the expectations, here is a translation with some explanations:

LECTURE FICHE #__ Reading response worksheet. These will be explained before being sent home.

LECTURE ___(book title)___ Reading should be about 15 minutes each night. Books that are sent home are usually a lower level than what is worked on in class to allow students to 'show off' their skills and practice fluency. No new book will go home until the other one is returned.

ORTHOGRAPHE [spelling]
- Pratiquer liste # __ study word list # __

TEST DEMAIN [test tomorrow] Review spelling words or math concepts, get enough rest and eat a good breakfast.

MATHS additions to be memorized, extra work to reinforce concepts already seen in class, etc.

GRAMMAIRE grammar worksheets to reinforce concepts such as punctuation, plurals, etc.

NOTE memos to parents from teacher, administration or Home & School including newsletters, pamphlets or other handouts

BLOG will indicate that I have written a new post for you to consult instead of sending home notes on paper {saving forests!☺} (You may want to bookmark our class blog.)

RAPPELS [Reminders]

LIVRES DE BIBLIO library books to be returned - These books are chosen by the student. They are not homework. If it is too difficult or too easy, remind your child of how to choose a book like Madame taught them:

Purpose (Why do I want to read this?)

Intesting subject

Comprehension (Can I understand?)

Know lots of words (not too hard, not too easy)

I hope this will help you understand the expectations for your child's homework. In grade three, homework should be no more than thirty minutes. If it is frequently longer, please let me know. I may need to adjust assignments.
