Pumpkin season ...

Bonjour!

The Centre Belle-Alliance (community center part of the French school in St. Eleanors) is hosting their annual pumpkin festival. This is an excellent opportunity for your child to use the French language outside the school and also for you to witness it.

Saturday, October 18th, there is a free circus workshop with l'École de cirque des Îles for ages 8 to 14. There is a limit of 20. Today is the last day to register at 902-888-1681. The workshop is from 9:30 am to 3 pm with lunch provided. At 6:30 there is a free performance by L'École de cirque des Îles and the participants of the workshop.

On Wednesday, October 22nd from 4:00 to 8:00, there is an open house at the J.-Henri-Blanchard library at École-sur-Mer. Remember, this is a public library where you can borrow French DVDs, CDs as well as books and books on CD. The librarian is bilingual, she can speak en français with your child and speak English with you.

On Saturday, October 25th, there is story time and a craft with a pirate theme at the library. Children are invited to wear their costumes.

While you are in the center, you can check out the entries to the contest that were submitted by some of our students. To thank us for participating, the Belle-Alliance is giving our school seventy-five dollars to purchase French books.

Update

At the beginning of each week, I will send a reading response sheet and a worksheet (math or grammar). I have explained to students that I don't expect them to do all the sheets on the first day. The math is marked for Tuesday's homework and the reading response for Wednesday's. I have also included a translation of the reading response sheets to help you. If some sections don't apply to that particular book, it is okay to skip them. Students were also told that if they know they won't have time to do homework on Tuesdays (because of hockey practice, piano lessons, etc.) they may choose to do it on Monday. Also, students who finish their work before the other students have the opportunity to start their homework in class. (Using time wisely is very important in my class.)

There is a used book sale Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Books are 25 cents each or 5 for a dollar. Proceeds will go toward the Terry Fox Foundation and the purchase of new library books for our school.

Regarding the Scholastic book orders, a parent asked a very good question. I thought I could share with all of you. The company has levels of difficulty from 1 to 4. At this time of year, I would order level 2. Later on in the year, my students should be able to read the level 3 books with a better understanding.

We are finally settling into routines and getting to know each other better. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

And we're off!

First of all, I want to thank you for filling in the tons of paperwork so promptly and for attending parent information night.  My students are very fortunate to have such great support at home.
I am fortunate as well since Mme Lisa will be assisting me in the classroom for an hour every day.
I would like to ask your help ensuring that your child has the basics under control: tying their shoes, spelling their last name and holding their pencil properly. Untied shoelaces are a safety issue. A correct pencil grasp will help make cursive handwriting much easier.
P.S. One of our classmates has a severe allergy to nuts. Please be extra vigilant when checking food labels. No food that MAY CONTAIN nuts should be packed in lunches. Thank you!

Bonjour!

We are off to a good start! I am pleased to be hearing French in class and to see quiet students listening to instructions. The class has already received  a commendation for their behavior. Bravo!

I want to remind you that our school is scent-free due to some allergies. If your child has hand sanitizer, it should be scent-free to respect this policy. Merci!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. I certainly appreciate any issues being brought directly to my attention.

I look forward to seeing you next Thursday evening  for Parent Information Night at 6:30.

P.S. Please disregard the date above, I don't know how to change it! This post was updated September 4th, 2014.
